If you are unfamiliar with CBD, you might be hesitant to allow anything cannabis-related to be given to your best friend? Even though it is a Cannabinoid and can both be found in cannabis plants (hemp or marijuana), CBD interacts with the brain differently. So, the answer to the first question is, no; CBD can't get your dog high. In fact, many of the therapeutic benefits humans derive from CBD can also apply to our dogs (and other animals) when administered properly.

Not only will CBD not get your dog high, but it is also completely safe. According to the World Health Organization, there are no found adverse effects on animals treated with CBD. Research shows that a significant number of dogs taking CBD show elevated ALP levels. ALP is an enzyme/accelerator within the blood that helps break down proteins and is vital to the liver. ALP elevation has led to questions on liver toxicity; however, the researchers acknowledge additional studies ought to be conducted.

Researchers have begun finding out the effect of CBD on dogs. One study, revealed within the journal of American Veterinary Medical Association shows that epileptic dogs can be treated with CBD. They discovered that, compared to the placebo cluster, dogs treated with CBD experienced a drastic reduction in seizures. The study was not extensive, so more research and tests are needed.

Another study specializing in dogs with arthritis also has remarkable findings. Testing using a placebo and CBD separately, researchers and medical assessors found dogs treated with CBD to experience a major decrease in pain. They also found the dogs treated with CBD to be a lot more willing to interact in physical activity than those within the placebo group.

The research on CBD for dogs continues to be developed therefore there are no firm medical claims. However, verified and accepted studies indicate a large variety of potential health benefit of CBD for dogs.

Dogs have an Endocannabinoid system that functions equally to that of humans. Given this, it is understood that Cannabinoids like CBD act with their brain in a very similar manner to that of human. Though nothing is confirmed yet, most of the studies on CBD and its relationship to humans also apply to dogs - in theory. Based on these studies, and the anecdotal testimony from pet owners, CBD is potentially an exciting prospect for dogs.

CBD is thought to alleviate the following conditions in dogs:

Inflammation Pain
Because CBD shares metabolic pathways with anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), there is increasing evidence that it helps in inflammatory processes, such as arthritis or inflammatory bowel diseases (e.g. IBD). In some dogs, the complete substitution of anti-inflammatory drugs for CBD has even been possible, a very desirable fact in dogs that suffer from the side effects of NSAIDs due to their need for long-term use. The benefit of CBD Oil as an anti-inflammatory observed in dogs suffering from arthritis or osteoarthritis not only has benefits at the inflammatory level but also acts indirectly by reducing pain. In dogs with other types of inflammatory pain as well, as is the case with back pain due to intervertebral disc disorders, neuropathic pain or other pain of chronic origin.
Seizures Neurodegenerative Diseases

Seizures are the most studied application of CBD in people, and it is starting to be in dogs. Various investigations have shown that CBD is capable of reducing the intensity and frequency of seizures in dogs diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy.

Additionally, the AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) is sponsoring a study, through the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences that will evaluate the use of CBD in treatment-resistant epileptic dogs. It is expected that by November this year we will have the results available.

In people, CBD has been studied for possible use in cancer patients, both to treat the tumour or tumours directly and to treat secondary symptoms of cancer and chemotherapy. Very limited research has been done on the utilization of CBD for dogs with cancer. However, the anti-nausea effects of CBD seen in individuals receiving chemotherapy have conjointly been documented in rats and ferrets, suggesting that dogs receiving chemotherapy will benefit from CBD treatment in these cases.
Neurodegenerative Diseases Anxiety
Some veterinarians who have tried it on their patients have observed a marked improvement in symptoms in older dogs with cognitive dysfunction syndrome. Disorientation, sleep cycle disturbances, decreased activity or increased anxiety or restlessness and appetite disturbances are the most typical symptoms in this pathology. If your dog has an issue with separation anxiety, for example, a dose of CBD can help keep them calm until you come back. It can also help the dog deal with the stress of inflammation and severe pain.

CBD for Dogs: Recommendations for Administration

Bear in mind that if your dog is being treated medically for some other pathology, the safe concentration of Cannabidiol and the drug in question may be altered by the compounds interacting with each other. That is why it is important to inform your veterinarian before deciding to use CBD for your dog.

Generally, each dog may respond differently, it is important to start with the lowest dose, monitor your dog's results, and adjust to it. Most products will offer dosage suggestions. The CBD oil for dogs is generally administered orally using a dropper. Avoid putting the dropper directly on your dog's mouth to avoid contamination; If it is done inadvertently, clean it well afterwards. On the other hand, you could use a teaspoon or syringe. If possible, try to administer it without food, for better absorption.

Wrapping up

Since CBD Oils for dogs are not comprehensively regulated, there are square measure bound things you'll have to look for during shopping for CBD Oil. First off, you'll want to be certain that the CBD is derived from hemp and not cannabis. Hemp has been bred to contain solely trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)

Second, note how the CBD was extracted. If the CBD was manufactured using CO₂, you should be in the clear to buy the CBD. If it wasn't, the manufacturer likely utilized propane, butane, or something similar for extraction. This, of course, presents a big danger to pets, and will even be dangerous in CBD Oil used by humans. Lastly, organic oils are generally safer, and you should prioritize them in your shopping list.
