Migraines and headaches are two very common health complaints affecting around half to three-quarters of all adults at least once each year. Among those who experience headaches, around 30% also experience migraines. Migraines are more severe types of headaches that may present themselves with more serious symptoms such as nausea, sensitivity to light and/or sound, and inability to think clearly. In serious cases, migraines can last for hours or even days.
Treating migraines and headaches can be tricky as they often occur frequently making common pain medication unsuitable. CBD is promising in the treatment of headaches and migraines and whilst there are just a few small studies looking at CBD and migraines/headaches specifically, there is a wealth of evidence around CBD’s ability to treat chronic pain.
CBD for migraines and headaches could prove to be an effective and safe, long-term treatment option.
It can be difficult to pinpoint whether or not a headache is a migraine and vice versa.
Migraines are a type of headache disorder, headache is an umbrella term for any achy or painful sensation felt in or around the head. Headache disorders include the 3 main types of headache
Tension headaches tend to be a more general, all-over ache that occurs over both sides of the head. Migraines usually present themselves over one area or one side of the head.
Migraines tend to be much more intense than headaches and are often accompanied by a pounding or pulsing sensation. Cluster headaches, a rarer form of headache, often come in temporary bouts of severe pain that subside into periods of remission.
Migraine sufferers can experience other symptoms that are rarely present with tension or cluster headaches and may include aura, which are sensory disturbances to hearing and vision, nausea, or even vomiting.
Whilst migraines are relatively common, it can be quite distressing when someone experiences one for the first time. Sometimes, regular migraine sufferers can even read symptoms that signal an impending ‘migraine attack’, including a fuzzy feeling, pressure or throbbing in the head.
Medical attention is always advised when headaches present themselves with serious symptoms such as seizures, loss of balance, serious vomiting and severe sensory changes.
The most common causes or triggers of headaches and migraines are stress and anxiety, muscle and eye strain, allergies and/or other illness (like colds and infections) and diet/lifestyle-related causes, e.g. dehydration, excessive alcohol consumption or caffeine.
The causes of more serious migraines are a little more complex and we still do not understand their exact cause. They could be triggered by stress, anxiety, depression and other psychological problems, as well as small changes to nerve signals in the brain, changes in brain blood flow, hormone changes or allergies.
Even severe migraines are mostly benign and don’t indicate any structural problems with the brain, but still, their symptoms can be disabling, especially for regular sufferers.
Research into migraines and headaches is ongoing but at the moment, most treatments focus on either preventing migraines in the first place or relieving their symptoms.
That is where CBD Oil from BWell CBD can help.
CBD is a promising compound for headache relief owing to its Analgesic Anti-Pain effects and potential to provide stress and anxiety relief. Using CBD for migraines and headaches is also safe compared to taking regular pain medicine such as Opioids, which are known to be addictive.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical found in and harvested from industrial Hemp Plants. There are approximately 113 chemicals contained within cannabis plants but CBD from Hemp Plants accounts for around 40% of hemp’s chemical extracts.
CBD interacts with our brain and nervous system via the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Our brains and bodies actually produce their own endogenous cannabinoids - these natural cannabinoids are produced inside the body.
Cannabinoids are a vital component of many bodily functions ranging from sleeping to eating, mood stability and pain management. When we use CBD for migraines, headaches and other conditions, we are essentially ‘topping up’ the CBD that is already present in our brain and blood. Of course, CBD found in hemp is still natural as it’s produced naturally by the plant itself. CBD extracted from natural hemp provides us with a convenient way to harness CBD and top up our own natural supply.
So, is CBD oil good for migraines and headaches? By all accounts, CBD is a promising therapeutic compound and research continues to uncover ways in which it can be used therapeutically. CBD has been identified as a promising compound for treating many conditions ranging from anxiety to tension to depression, insomnia and eating disorders, as well as headaches and migraines.
A 2017 review surrounding the positive effects of CBD for migraines and headaches concluded that there is considerable anecdotal evidence suggesting that CBD helps headache and migraine sufferers, and that the effects of CBD on headaches should be further assessed in clinical research
Concrete evidence surrounding the treatment of headaches and migraines using CBD is still lacking, but several small studies have linked CBD usage with much fewer and less severe headaches and migraines amongst sufferers.
One study conducted at Washington State University found that headache and migraine frequency was cut by some 50%. Other studies have inferred that CBD will be useful for migraine and headache sufferers due to its well-documented analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.
We know that stress, anxiety and muscle strain are three key causes of headaches and migraines. CBD can help by influencing and reducing these triggers.
For stress and anxiety, CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system to moderate the production of serotonin whilst also shielding the hippocampus. The hippocampus is a vulnerable brain structure that plays a key role in stress mediation and moderation.
Evidence suggests that CBD promotes regeneration of several areas of the hippocampus related to stress. By promoting serotonin production whilst protecting the hippocampus, CBD can reduce stress and anxiety, thus helping prevent headaches.
For chronic pain, CBD is found to increase the concentration of anandamide in the blood. CBD prevents the body from re-absorbing anandamide, meaning that there is more of it in the bloodstream. CBD has been found effective in the treatment of many types of chronic pain, so there’s no real reason to think that pain from headaches or migraines would be any different.
At the same time, CBD may relax the muscles by moderating chemicals that interact with our nerves and muscles. This combined action of muscle relaxation and pain relief could be useful in the treatment of headache and migraine-related pain.
CBD for migraines and headaches is still undergoing research but anecdotal evidence and some clinical studies seem to strongly indicate that it could be beneficial.
